一、引言

大学英语四级考试自1987年实施以来已经历经23个年头。这期间，四级考试对提高大学英语教学质量，推动广大学生英语水平均起到了重要的作用。而当前形势下，四级考试也已获得社会的广泛认可，成为大学生升学、就业、晋级的重要依据。四级考试在境外的影响也日益扩大。很多国外大学早已将四六级考试成绩作为中国学生攻读硕士、博士学位的英语水平证明。此外，四级考试通过率还是教育部考核高校的重要指标，也是校际之间可以比较的一项重要指标。所以，提高大学英语四级通过率、培养适应21世纪的应用型人才是高等学校的重要任务之一。对独立学院的学生而言，与众多本一和本二的高校学生相比，在就业市场上处于劣势地位，持有大学英语四级考试证书就等于在求职就业时给自己增加了砝码，让自己具备与其他层次学校的学生同等竞争的资本。近年来，南京理工大学泰州科技学院四级通过率稳步提高，但离学院要求、兄弟院校的通过率尚有一定距离，仍有提高的空间；部分学生因四级不过而找不到较好的工作。有鉴于此，外语教师应认真分析影响四级通过率的主要因素，研究四级考试题型，研究应试技巧，做好四级训练与平时教学的有效结合，做好考前强化，切实提高学生四级通过率。

二、影响四级通过率的因素

1.学生英语基础和学习计划性

与重点本科类学校不同，独立学院普遍存在生源英语基础差，自律性不强的问题。南京理工大学泰州科技学院大学英语采用分级教学的模式，学生入学后根据英语高考成绩按照一定的标准编入A、B、C三个级别，其中以英语基础薄弱的C级班人数居多。大学英语的难度对于大多数学生而言都是相当大的挑战。入院后，面对大学英语课程教学要求和四级考试的要求，部分学生逐渐感到灰心沮丧，失去学习英语的兴趣。同时，学生自主学习能力和自我管理能力相对较差，学习动机不明确，尽管面对考试的压力，却没有给自己制定系统的复习计划，也不能持之以恒地坚持练习，结果效果甚微。这样的学习状态也让大学英语教师的教学工作无法正常运行，达不到理想的效果。

2.四级考试新题型的影响

2004年教育部高等教育司制定了大学英语课程新的教学目标：培养学生的英语综合应用能力，特别是听说能力，使他们在今后的学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际。为适应新形势的发展，大学英语四级考试进行了重大改革。改革的一大特色就是加大了听力理解的题量和比例，内容上增加了长对话和复合式听写，同时听力的口音呈现多元化。而南京理工大学泰州科技学院大多学生，中学时接触的更多是词汇和语法的强化练习，并没有认识到听说在英语学习中的重要性；另外，由于地区的差异，部分省份高考不对听力作要求，所以中学教学中听力部分几乎是空白。南京理工大学泰州科技学院学生在听说方面的弱势普遍表现为：单词读音不准，不了解连读、重读、弱读、语调等语音现象；无法区分英音和美音；不能掌握某些特定情景场合中的常用表达方法；英美文化背景知识匮乏；语感差等。这些都导致学生在接触四级听力时不知所措，听力部分成为他们顺利过级的重要障碍。

阅读理解部分增加了快速阅读，与传统的篇章阅读相比，更加强调各种阅读技巧的灵活运用，尤其是对生词的清障能力。而独立学院大多学生因为词汇量极为贫乏，常将过多的时间放在个别单词和句子的理解上，而忽略了篇章的整体理解，阅读速度大大减慢，不能达到四级考试新大纲的要求。另外，选词填空部分考查考生综合运用语言的能力，测试重点在于对上下文的连贯性、一致性和逻辑性等语篇、语段的把握以及单词在实际语境中的理解。新题型对考生理解词汇和语法提出了更高的要求。而从大学英语教学反馈可以看出，南京理工大学泰州科技学院学生在中学时期对语言知识的掌握缺乏系统性，很多中学的词汇和语法仍需要在大学课堂中反复讲解，因此对篇章理解的速度和深度都不尽人意，以致在四级考试中失分较多。

3.教师对四级考试的理解和把握

教师虽不是四级考试的主体，却是考试主体的引导者，其对四级考试的理解和把握对学生的考试效果起着重要的作用。南京理工大学泰州科技学院外语系大学英语组的特点是：队伍年轻，富有朝气，能吃苦耐劳，虚心学习；但教学经验相对欠缺，在教学内容的把握和教学方法的运用方面还有很多需要完善的地方。另外，年轻教师将主要的精力放在教材内容的挖掘和课堂氛围的营造上，缺乏对四级考试内容的研究，也缺乏对学生优势与弱势的了解，因而无法调动学生的学习积极性，增强其自信心。

三、提高四级通过率的措施

1.教学内容方面

(1)将平时教学与四级训练有效结合

教学过程中，大学英语主要以课本为依托，但单一的课本教学无法满足学生的需求。四级考试的压力使得学生更注重应试的训练，而忽视综合能力的培养，因此他们对课本学习逐渐失去兴趣。面对学生这样急功近利的心态，大学英语教师应当能创造性地使用教材，利用教材中的资源，设计与四级题型相同的训练材料，这样一方面可以检测课堂学习的效率，也能够提高学生的积极性。

①课文讲解

对TextA的讲解要做到精、细、透，尤其是词汇、语法，包括句子结构、时态和语态等。能与四级结合的语言点都要给出具体的四级考题加以训练和讲解。听力方面，教材的每个单元开头都有一个与课文内容相关的听力练习。第一遍了解文章大致意思，第二遍回答相关的几个问题，这与四级听力中的短文听力比较类似。教师也可以灵活地把这个环节改为复合式听写。

②课后练习。传统的做法是，每单元讲完后，教师都会用一课时左右的时间带领学生做课后练习。教师在课堂上通常要求学生一题一题做，耗时多，进度慢，还显得单调乏味。可以尝试挑选一些难点、重点的句子进行练习、巩固，而腾出时间做四级练习，当堂评讲，使学生在老师统一指导下尽早地掌握四级所需的知识和解题技巧，坚持下去，学生应试能力必有提高。

对于大学英语四个学期的教学安排，可作适当改变。A、B、C三个级别均在第一二学期分别教授一二册，第三学期教授第三册及第四册部分内容，而第四学期则上测试课，即全部课内学时用作四级训练。我们在平时教学中传授给学生的是语言知识、文化信息；四级考题中的句子、篇章同样传达出各种各样的语言知识和丰富多彩的文化信息。学生在阅读、解题过程中，既汲取了语篇所表达的语言知识和文化信息，又学到了解题技巧，可谓一举两得。这种教学安排尤其对C级学生较为适合。应当将C级学生作为四级冲刺的重点，实行学、统一进度、统一强化、绝大多数学生在统一的时间参考四级的“四统一”的做法，下大力气提高这部分学生的四级通过率。当然，这种模式需要教务处根据学生考试通过情况对班级作局部调整。此外，对已经通过四级的学生，学院应作出规定，仍需参加英语课的学习，直至第四学期。第四学期时，其他学生上测试课；通过四级的学生，我系将根据师资情况，为他们开设六级强化课，或开设口语、阅读、翻译、影视欣赏、英美文化等课程。

2.外语系和教师方面

外语系应挑选优秀教师成立四级考试攻关小组。该小组由4人组成，按照四级考试的题型，分别专攻听力、阅读、综合和写作部分；强化训练前对所用训练教材先行一步，预先吃透教材内容，提出重点、难点、训练方法等，并带领全系做好强化训练工作。攻关小组还应走出去，到其他四级通过率比较高的学校进行考察，认真学习他人经验，并在此基础上形成自己的一套教学模式。

同时，所有教师自身要将更多的精力和时间用于教学研究和四级考试的研究。经常做题，对四级考试的出题方向和内容变化有足够的理解和把握，并针对考试中反复出现的高频词和关键结构等进行分析。同时要注意观察学生，了解学生的优势和弱势，这样课堂教学就会得心应手，学生的学习效果才会显著。

3.教学管理方面

提高四级考试通过率是一项综合工程，它不仅需要外语系的努力，也需要教学管理部门和其他各院系的共同努力。

学院可对通过四级考试的学生予以学分奖励。如：通过者奖励2个学分，优秀者奖励3个学分。学生可用奖励学分抵消不合格的学分或免修相关课程。

未通过四级的学生，可对其中的特殊人群予以适当处罚。如：凡二年级下学期未过四级的学生干部一律免职；大三或大四未过四级的入党积极分子不能被确定为发展对象；未通过四级的贫困生，取消其困难补助等。

学院在每年学生毕业时对各院系四级通过率进行统计，予以公示，并设立标准，对通过率较高的院系及其辅导员、班主任予以适当奖励(建议只做加法，不做减法)。
