一、引言
近年来,关于英语专业学生思辨能力缺乏的讨论越来越热。黄源深(1998,2010)曾两次撰文探讨外语专业学生思辨缺席的问题;孙有中(2011)提出要突出思辨能力的培养,改革英语专业教学。不只是英语专业的学生,非英语专业的学生在英语写作中所暴露出来的思辨能力的缺乏也十分严重。根据张在新等(1995)对中国学生作文的调查,分析了200名英语专业和非英语专业学生的写作测试成绩,发现有51%的学生作文缺乏细节,中国学生英语写作中最突出的问题是写作内容的贫乏。而非专业的大学英语教学大纲对写作的要求重视遣词造句,对主要思想和细节的发现和挖掘远远不够。秦朝霞(2009)在《国内大学英语写作研究现状及发展趋势分析》中也认为国内写作研究习惯于将习作者作品当作最终成品(End Product)进行剖析,忽略了写作过程中学生的构思活动,也忽略了写作过程与培养学生逻辑思维能力、批判思维能力(Critical Thinking)之间的关联,值得我们深思。如何培养学生的思辨能力,许多专家学者都提出了切实可行的措施,包括培养目标、课程设置、教学方法、课程测试、教材编写、教师发展等方面的改革变化。孙有中(2011)教授认为“写作是培养学生思辨能力的最有效的课程之一”。其实这是个相互的过程,写作的过程能促使学生进行思考辨析,而思辨能力的提高也能反过来促进写作能力的提高。如何在写作教学中培养学生的思辨能力是英语教师值得研究的课题。本文就是试图通过议论文写作教学活动来达到学生思辨能力和写作水平共同提高的双赢目的,文章将阐述开展这一教学活动的依据、步骤及其收到的效果,以期能为学生思辨能力的培养提供一种思路。
二、思辨能力与议论文的关系
思辨能力体现在议论文的立论和论据中,思辨性差,不仅提炼的观点没有深度,而且议论时不能反映事物的本质。文秋芳和刘润清(2006)在分析大学生抽象思维特点时用到的材料也是英语议论文,他们认为议论文是我国英语写作中最常见的一种文体,而且议论文比记叙文和说明文对思维的要求更高。根据P.A.Facione(2011)对思辨能力的定义,思辨能力包括六种认知能力(cognitive skills):阐释、分析、评价、推理、解释和自我调节。每种认知能力又可细解成多个具体的子技能。Facione(2011)在文章中对→www.kaoyantv.com←阐释(interpretation)的解释包括对信息的分类,解释和澄清。信息包罗万象,可以是以往的经历或经验、不同的情境、数据、事件,也可以是个人的判断、习俗、信念,或者是某种规则、过程、评判标准等等。分析(analysis)在文章中解释为证实各种说法、问题、概念、描述或者用来表达信仰、判断、经验、论据、信息或观点的各种表现形式之间的潜在的和能实际推论得出的关系。这一思辨技能的子技能为分析观点,分析论据和证实论据。评价(evaluation)就是评估某些说法和表现形式的可靠性。这种表现形式可以是某人的直觉、经验、情况、判断、信仰或观点的描述。评价还包括评估各种说法、描述、问题或其他表现形式之间潜在的和能实际推论得出的逻辑关系。它所包含的子技能有评价说法和论据。推理(inference)的过程包括三方面内容:证实用来得出合理结论的要素;形成假设;考虑相关的信息,并从数据、说法、原理、证据、判断、信仰、观点、概念、描述、问题或其他的表现形式中推断出结果。它包括质疑论据、判断选择、得出结论。解释(explanation)表现为将推理的结果以一种具有说服力的完整的方式呈现出来。它包括表明理由、摆出论据、证明过程三个子技能。自我调节(self-regulation)被解释为自觉地监查认知活动和在认知活动中使用到的要素及其推断出的结论。它包括自我检查和自我纠正。这些思辨能力在议论文的写作过程中都得到了体现。写作议论文前,学生在搜集资料阶段会用到阐释技能。面对庞杂的资料,学生需要根据自己的判断对它们进行分类整理,以备写作之用。同时,在对搜集到的材料整理归类时,需要运用评估的技能对众多的材料进行去芜存真。分析技能贯穿于写前准备、写中和写后反馈的全过程。学生在采用纷繁复杂的信息之前需要辨明、分析这些材料,才能让材料为己所用。在小组讨论中,也需要学生运用分析技能来评判同伴的资料;在写作过程中,更需学生分析材料来论证观点;在写后的反馈中,需要学生回顾分析写作过程的每个步骤,才能发现问题来改进。学生在各种论据的基础上运用推理得出自己的结论,这也是个解释论证的过程。学生写完后运用自我检测的技能,以读者的身份来看待自己的文章,能更加客观而且清晰地分析论据是否充分有效,论证是否有序合理,从而可以相对应地来改进自己文章。因此,议论文的整个写作过程能很好地诠释Facione所定义的思辨能力,用议论文写作来锻炼学生的思辨能力有了理论基础。

1. College Graduates Work as Village Officials
There is no denying the fact that it is a hotly debated topic today how college graduates should choose their careers. Some time ago, it was reported that some college graduates chose to work as village officials. To this people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view while others are against it. As far as I am concerned, I believe that it is a wise choice.
On the one hand, college graduates can contribute a lot to the development of the countryside. First, they can apply their professional knowledge there. Secondly, they can introduce new concepts to the countryside and speed the development of rural culture. As a result, the gap between the city and the countryside can well be bridged.
On the other hand, these graduates can benefit a lot from working as village officials. While too many college graduates are fighting for the handful of positions in big cities, these graduates can find themselves a wider stage of development and realize their value.
Therefore, college graduates working as village officials is a win-win choice and more graduates should be encouraged to work in the countryside.
Landing a Job Related to One’s Major or Not
That every college graduate lands a job perfectly geared to his major depends on a series of prerequisite conditions—that there are sufficient job opportunities, every graduate loves his major, the pay is satisfactory, and the location of the workplace is ideal, etc.
All those conditions render a perfect match between one’s specialty and one’s job a mere wish. In reality, such correspondence is possible only for a few fortunate students. For most students, some of whom cannot even find a job, they should be prepared for jobs only partially or even tangentially related to their major.
As a matter of fact, college education does not seek to produce students who only engage in careers based on their major. More and more universities now emphasize foundational and interdisciplinary education to develop broad-caliber students capable of coping with diverse challenges in a rapidly changing world. An important function of university education is just to expand students’ intellectual capacity and enhance their emotional maturity. Students must realize that studying a particular major does not automatically guarantee a ready career in that major.
Of course, students embarking on graduate studies should pursue careers related to their major. A student prepared to spend two or three years on a Master’s program and another three or five years on a . program must have an intense and genuine interest in a particular subject. The failure to work in a related field would be a huge waste of the time and energy, and of the in-depth knowledge acquired.
In seeking a job, a student should opt for the job that accords with his interest and allows him to best exploit his talents. One’s career success depends not necessarily on one’s specialized knowledge, but on how one updates the existing knowledge and fits into a new environment.

1.主题句(topic sentence)
从原则上讲,每段涉及的主题不宜超过一个,主题多了,不利于突出中心。主题句是对段落中心意思的概括,是段落的核心,最好放在段首,让读者一眼就看出该段的主题,也可根据需要放在段中或段尾,还可以在段首出现、段尾强调重复。
(1)In the past years,there have been great changes in people's diet。
(2)From the graph given above,it can be seen that people's living standard has been improved。
这样的句子或引述事实及现状,或提出问题及看法,作为观点句置于段落的不同位置,起提纲契领的作用。
2.支持句(supporting sentences)
当段落的主题句确定之后,我们就该提供支持句对主题句进行说明、解释、论证,发展主题句所提出的论点,从而对主题句有完整、准确的了解。例如:

(2)Unfortunately,however,tourism also gives rise to a number of problems.
这些句子或分析原因、或进行比较,或阐述不同观点,或进行反面论述,由它们扩展的句子都称为支持句。

二、语言运用
通常作者对自己论述的观点是清楚的,但在将观点传达给读者时,往往因为用词不准确,逻辑欠严密,出现一些似是而非、违反英语基本语法规则的句子。最常见的问题是在不一致问题上,即主谓不一致、时态不一致及代词指代关系不一致等。试看下例子:
(1)When one has money,he can do what he wants to.
one是单数,应用has而不是have;同理,wants中“s”不可丢。
(2)There is all kinds of people.
“There is”句型中主语为all kinds of是复数概念,因此is应该为are.
(3)Some people thought that money is the source of happiness.
本句中主句与从句时态不一致,thought应改为think.
(4)Nowadays,college students should getting to know the would outside the campus.
这句属于动词形态上的误用。用于情态动词should之后动词用原形,不可用非谓语动词形式的Ving.

这句属于动词形态的误用,will和can都为情态动词,两个中只能用一个。
三、写作步骤
1.我们要认真审题
认真审题是写好作文的前提,考试是命题作文,这就明确了文章的主题,限定写作的范围。只有审对文章题目的含义,才能引用切入主题的事实、道理或例证去论证文章所要求阐述的观点,这样文章才能组织得有条理,体现出完整性,才能有效地根据写作题目做文章,即扣题写作。
2.审题和结构的过程也是拟题纲的过程
我们按主题句列出几个支持句的要点即可成为一个很好的提纲。

3.组段成章
好的文章要注意解决好段落的连贯过渡问题,既要处理各自然段在内容上的相关衔接,又要借助语言表达手段,如加上适合的连接词语,使各自然段过渡自然,前呼后应,整体文章通顺流畅。为了解决好文章的连贯过渡问题,需学会使用英语作文启、承、转、合的词语,凭借这些词语可把句与句、段落与段落连接起来,起承上启下的作用,使通篇丝丝入口,形成语义连贯的统一体,即一篇好的作文。
4.检查修改
任何人在写作过程中都难免出现错漏之处,在平时练习作文时,一定要养成认真修改的习惯,以便在自己的英语和表达能力的范围内尽量完善地表达文章的内容。在应试时,着重检查以下几个问题:(1)动词时态、语言、人称是否正确?(2)各词的单复数是否一致?主谓及代词指代关系是否一致?(3)动词搭配及词组是否有错?(4)句型结构是否正确?(5)句子是否完整无缺?(6)大小写及词的拼写是否有错?(7)标点符号是否正确?
